UCAA of IRELAND and NIAF Cross-Country Championships

Castle Park, Bangor - 29/01/2005

Harty wins NI Intermediate Cross-Country
&
Irish Colleges Mountain Titles in Same Weekend

McNeilly edged out

The last Saturday in January dawned fine and spring-like with the recent calm and dry weather very welcome after the storms of the first half of January. Underfoot conditions in Castle Park in Bangor had firmed markedly from the cross-country relays only a fortnight earlier. This was the venue for the Northern Ireland Veteran, Intermediate and Junior Cross-Country Championship races.

First off were the veterans in a 98-strong field with Newcastle AC's Deon McNeilly one of the favourites. The race, over two laps, making three miles, was fast from the start and McNeilly immediately tried to break the 100-strong field. By the end of lap one he had a 20-metre gap over former Commonwealth Games star and sub-four minute miler, Ballymena & Antrim's Mark Kirk. But Kirk edged back in conditions that suited him better to pass McNeilly and stride away at pace. McNeilly had no answer and had to settle for second.

Behind, Foyle Valley's Damien McGinty took bronze, four seconds ahead of Newcastle AC's Richard Rodgers. Newcastle's fifth placed team was made up of Jim Patterson in 48th, Dave Bell in 58th and Marty McVeigh in 76th.

Harty storms to first senior cross-country title

Next up was the combined women's junior, intermediate and veterans race over 2.5 miles. The field of sixty runners included Newcastle AC's Kerry Harty, St Anne's prolific veteran champion (5-times age group winner at the British & Irish Home International cross-country) Karen Marshall and City of Derry favourite Anne Paul.

Running from the front, as only she knows how, Harty pulled away right from the start in controlled fashion, taking Marshall and Paul with her. Behind her a big group included Harty's teammate Martina Hawkins with Anne Sandford and Clare Galbraith making up the Burrendale Hotel & Country Club-sponsored Newcastle team vying for a championship medal.

With half a mile to go Harty kicked for home as she exited the muckiest section of the course and dropped through the tight corners in the trees. At the finish she had 7 seconds on Marshall and 11 seconds on Paul. Hawkins once again showed her immense potential ahead of the mountain-racing season coming home in 9th place in 17 minutes and 54 seconds.

With Sandford and Galbraith in 13th and 14th respectively, Newcastle picked up the silver medal behind the City of Derry ladies, marking the pinnacle so far of their first cross-country season.

Newcastle AC 4th in NI Junior Cross-Country Championships

The final race of the day was the NI Junior over four laps of the circuit making six miles in all. All runners who haven't won an NI Senior Championship title (team or individual) are eligible for the 'junior'. It is 18 years (February 1987) since Newcastle won the 'junior' and slowly but surely there is a squad being established to challenge again for gold over the next few years.

This year, however, the team had to settle for 4th place again (two years in a row) behind City of Derry, Willowfield and Abbey AC. Alan McKibben led home the team in a fine 12th place in the 105-strong field. He was ably supported by Ed Hanna in 29th, Gary Bailey in 40th, Stevie Cunningham in 41st, Joe McCann in 42nd and Damien Brannigan in 76th.

Harty takes Irish Colleges Mountain Racing Title

Just after 6am on Sunday and the trek to the Wicklow Hills begins for the Irish Colleges Mountain Racing Championship, incorporated into the Leinster Winter League Series. The venue was the Djouce Lake Car Park in the picturesque setting between Sugar Loaf, Djouce and Maulin mountains.

The race itself took place around the flanks of Maulin itself. After last year's snow, the conditions this year were a bit drier underfoot, but still with a lot of muck with a light to fresh north-westerly wind taking the edge off the temperature especially as bits and pieces of drizzle came and went. 120 runners took the start gun and after an easy half-mile or so, a reasonably gentle climb through the forest followed. Newcastle AC runners Sinead Murphy and Kerry Harty were part of the University of Ulster team, whilst Richard Rodgers and ACKC's Gary Bailey were also competing in the open race itself.

Harty got off to her usual fast start and after about ten minutes of running was caught and passed by Irish International Orla Touhy. As the race left the forest onto the mountain proper, Harty stayed in touch and re-passed Touhy on the second climb after crossing the Dargle River footbridge.

Bailey, fresh, or indeed not so fresh, from six miles of strength sapping cross-country the day before, was having a great race. Sitting around 20th after the first fifteen minutes, he started to work through the field and by the top of the second climb, he had moved into 6th place. As the race charged down the zigzags in the forest, Bailey consolidated his position and gained another place as the race climbed steeply up the Maulin Ride.

Meanwhile, Harty was caught on the Maulin ride by another Irish International, this time Maureen Foley, but again with more confidence in her running these days, she hung on and as the race returned over the Dargle River, Harty once again hit the front.

Up ahead, Bryan Keane from North Dublin was winning the race in fine style in 47 minutes and 6 seconds. Newcastle's Richard Rodgers came home 4th and first veteran in 48 minutes and 46 seconds with ACKC's Gary Bailey in 6th in 49 minutes and 15 seconds.

Harty never looked back and came home to win the women's race outright and the Colleges title, in an amazing 19th place overall in 55 minutes and 22 seconds. The measure of her recent improvement is seen in her time being over seven and a half minutes faster than last year. She was over a minute ahead at the end of the Foley in second and took three current Irish international scalps in the process.

Behind, Sinead Murphy was also doing herself proud coming home in 6th place in the College Race in 63 minutes and 59 seconds, another big improvement on last year at around 5 minutes faster. The University of Ulster team came second just behind University College Dublin.
