Les Jones 10k 2005
Friday 13th February 2005
The night after Race 6 of the hill and Dale Series (Hen
and Cock) saw the Les Jones Memorial 10km road race in
Belfast. Many remember Les Jones best as being Zola Budd's
minder when she turned up as the bare-footed young waif
from South Africa and ran on to become the best female
distance athlete in the world. Jones tragically dies of
a hear attack after being secretary of Northern Ireland
Athletics for many years.
In the excellent memorial race that raised finance
for his Charity Trust, over 250 runners turned up on
a fine spring evening to race from the Mary Peter's
Track, along the towpath with the sting in the tail
being the climb to Barnett's House before the downhill
finish to the track.
Locals were represented by Richard Rodgers, 9th in
35 minutes and 7 seconds and 2nd veteran40, Joe McCann
11th in 35 minutes 47 seconds, Paul Rodgers 14th in
36 minutes and 5 seconds and 3rd veteran40, Paul Mawhirt
20th in 38 minutes and 4 seconds, Kerry Harty third
lady in 40 minutes and 21 seconds and Clare Galbraith
1st lady veteran40 in 42 minutes and 10 seconds.
